Home / News / Industry News / The “Waterproof Paradox” of Leather Texture Board: How YAKCO Leather Design Surpasses Genuine Leather in Wet Areas

Genuine leather sofas cannot enter steam rooms, and leather wallpapers cannot be applied in bathrooms. The reason is simple: leather deteriorates with water– it is afraid of moisture, heat, and abrasion.
Yet designers and homeowners still hope to retain the premium touch and warm texture of leather in spaces. This has long been a “material contradiction”.
Tech: yakco technology

YAKCO Leather Design Melamine Board breaks this deadlock: using melamine impregnated paper to press leather textures such as goat texture and woven texture.
Rely on a series of durability data including resistance to vapor Grade 5 (highest grade) and resistance to dry heat Grade 5, it moves leather texture board from “living room cabinet doors” into the “most humid areas with heavy vapor”.
While other leather grain boards are still “afraid of water”, YAKCO has already obtained a Grade 5 vapor‑resistance certificate.

Comparison:

1.Long‑term contact with vapor:

Genuine Leather: Mold, hardening, discoloration

Ordinary: Blistering, delamination, discoloration

Yakco: Grade 5 – No blistering, no delamination

2.Hot plate / hot cup bottom placed:

Genuine Leather: Irreversible white rings

Ordinary: Easily causes uneven gloss

Yakco: Grade 5 – No visible heat marks

3.Repeated wiping with a damp cloth:

Genuine Leather: Surface darkens, colour fades

Ordinary: Pattern wears, turns white

Yakco: No show‑through after 350 rotations

4.Soy sauce/coffee spills:

Genuine Leather: Penetrates and leaves stains

Ordinary: Risk of stain penetration

Yakco: Resistance to surface staining Grade 4– wipes clean

What does resistance to vapor Grade 5 mean?

In the test, boiling water vapor at 100°C is continuously sprayed onto the board surface. The national standard only requires ≥ Grade 4, while YAKCO achieved Grade 5 (the highest).

Three sets of data that support leather texture board’s “daring to enter wet areas”:

1.First set: Resistance to vapor Grade 5 (highest)– Leather texturecan also be applied in steam rooms

YAKCO achieved Grade 5, far exceeding the national standard requirement of ≥ Grade 4.

This means that even in environments with relative humidity above 90% and drastic temperature fluctuations, the decorative layer and substrate will not blister or delaminate due to moisture penetration.

2.Second set: Resistance to dry heat Grade 5 (highest)– Hot coffee cups can be placed directly without a coaster

Leather surfaces are most afraid of heat.

YAKCO achieved Grade 5 in resistance to dry heat, exceeding the national standard requirement of Grade 4.

A hot soup bowl bottom, an electric kettle base, or a temporary placement of a curling iron will not leave white heat marks or gloss loss.

It is not afraid of heat.

3.Third set: Resistance to surface staining Grade 4 + Wear resistance– no show‑through after 350 rotations– withstands wiping

The grooves and gaps of leather texture naturally tend to trap dirt.

YAKCO achieved Grade 4 in resistance to surface staining– soy sauce, red wine, and coffee wipe clean with a damp cloth.

In wear resistance, after 350 rotations no show‑through occurs, with a wear value of only 57 mg/100r (national standard ≤80 mg/100r).

Even with repeated wiping using detergents, the leather texture does not fade or get “worn flat”. It is not afraid of wiping.

Stable substrate gives leather grain its “confidence”

Any surface performance is inseparable from substrate support. YAKCO Melamine Board Substrate provides:

1.Density 0.72 g/cm³, uniformly distributed, ensuring that the leather texture remains clear and undistorted during pressing;

2.Internal bond 0.36 MPa, the substrate is compact and non‑delaminating, allowing the leather decorative layer to “hold on” firmly even under vapor impact;

3.Moisture content 5.3%, low shrinkage and swelling, protecting the decorative layer from micro‑cracks in high‑humidity environments.

Leather texture, industrial durability – finally having both the fish and the bear’s paw

Designers have always been looking for a material that shows the texture of leather, feels the warmth of leather, and is easy to maintain– no need for regular oiling, no need to avoid water stains, no fear of sunlight or humidity.

YAKCO Leather Design Melamine Board provides the answer: combining high‑end leather textures such as goat texture and woven patterns with industrial‑grade durability– resistance to vapor Grade 5, resistance to dry heat Grade 5, and resistance to surface staining Grade 4.

Leather texture board can finally transform from “visual leather” to “functional leather”.

YAKCO specializes in the R&D and manufacturing of Melamine Faced Boards, offering parallel series of leather texture, rock texture, 3D wood texture, and Art Deco.
YAKCO provides a “warm touch + hardcore durability” decorative solution for high‑end commercial and residential spaces.
